Album Spotlight : The Earth Pushed Back

Image
Have Mercy is one of those bands that hit home straight from the minute I heard them. Their infectious sound and powerful lyrics will always bring me back to a place of solemn and sad nostalgia but only for a moment. After this moment of true and pure grief I realize how far I’ve come and how deeply my roots have grown both as a music lover and as a person. Their album “The Earth Pushed Back” was released on May 31st 2013 just a few years before my first Warped tour, my first Rise Against Concert, my first mosh pit and so many other formative moments in my life. I was going through a lot at the time and so this is my own love letter to this genre and album.      The album opens up with the track “Level Head”. Which has a call to action beginning that still gets me ready to participate in the lyrics and experience that is this album. This track as well as the album has a lot of reverb on it which I have always felt gives it that empty parking lot feel as well ...

Band spotlight: Comeback Kid and show review for 1720!

Image
J ust this past week I had the honor of seeing a band many of us in the hardcore scene grew up on. That band was none other than Comeback Kid from Winnipeg Canada. The band just finished its US portion of its tour for the 25th anniversary of their biggest album “Wake The Dead”. They are now onto the European part of the tour and man do they put on a show.   The band’s first album “Turn It Around” was released in 2002 and they have been playing shows ever since. Over the years they have gone through a few line up changes with the most notable being Scott Wade being lead vocals from 2001-2006 with Andrew Neufeld being their vocalist from 2006-present. However their fan favorite album has got to be “Wake The Dead”. This album has some of their biggest songs to date such as the albums title track “Wake The Dead”. It features crunchy and heavy guitar riffs and heavy breakdowns. It also shows off the bands anthem like lyrics which really get a crowd involved in the show; something...

Band Spotlight : Koyo

Image
It’s quite a while since a band has truly brought me back to when I first started listening to punk rock way back in high school. However Koyo from Long Island New York does just that. Their heavy yet emotional sound makes me go “man I wish I had these guys when I was in high school!” However, Koyo is here now which has put a new sense of revival and new beginnings in me!  Koyo is my favorite band discovery of the past two years for sure! The band put out their first EP “ Painting Words Into Lines” back in March of 2020. The first song I ever heard of theirs was off this album. The song called “Heaven so heavy” is a perfect song to introduce yourself to this band with. It’s got their unique yet familiar guitar sound which is both crunchy and yet somehow mellow and sonically soothing which pairs well with their emotional gritty lyrics about life and its struggles.   My second favorite of all their releases came out in 2021. Titled “DRIVES OUT EAST” this album has on...

Band spotlight : NAKEDBURN

From left to right (Rob Licandro, Alex Clancy, Matt Gurassi, Luc Chiasson, Michael Van)        This month’s Band Spotlight Features 5 Piece emo rock band NAKEDBURN! Coming all the way from Toronto Canada NAKEDBURN consists of Matt Gurassi - Vocals, Rob Licandro - Guitar/ Vocals, Luc Chiasson - Guitar/ Production, Michael Van - Bass, and Alex Clancy - Drums. The band released its first single titled “Smoke” back in April of 2023 and since then has released 4 other singles all within the emo, rock, and pop punk genres.        The band bursts onto the scene in a new explosion of energy with the release of their newest single “jaded” today! Not only did this new single feature Canadian punk icon Liam Cormier of “Cancer Bats”, but it also but it gives the band a fresh new revival of energy and shows just how talented they truly are. “jaded” is the first look into the bands EP “Drowning” which is set to release in early 2025. In this new EP the ba...

Band Spotlight : Calling All Captains

Image
Calling All Captains has come a long way since they first started their musical journey, and let me say they deserve it all! My first live experience seeing Calling All Captains was way back in 2019 when they played the Hi-Hat in Highland Park CA. I saw them with about 10 other people but they poured their hearts into their performance. Just recently I saw them again for the second time at Chain Reaction in Anaheim CA and the experience was just as surreal!      Since seeing them in 2019 the band has sized down from a 5 piece to a 4 piece band consisting of Brad Bremner (Guitar/Vocals), Connor Dawkins (Guitar/Vocals) Luc Gauthier (Lead Vocals), and Tim Wilson (Drums). However this decrease in size has certainly not impacted the bands sound and    style in any way. In fact one of my favorite things about this band is their evolution of sound. On their first EP “Nothing Grows Here” the band was very raw and crunchy definitely giving off ...

Band Spotlight : Bite The Hand

Image
Over the past few months, I’ve discovered that Arizona bands that consist of hardcore, punk, and alternative music are truly a force to be reckoned with. Bands such as Fortuna Malvada consisting of their crunchy tone with heavy breakdowns and Velour with their heavy emo shoe gaze sounds carry onto the scene of heaviness and emotion towards the crowd. However, somewhere in between angst and emotion, we have Bite the Hand, a band that brings in the comfort of safe spaces and freedom.  Emerging from the vast suburbia of Phoenix, AZ, Bite the Hand is already making big inclusive waves in the scene of hardcore and punk music. They have truly been on a mission to get the current crowd going while welcoming newcomers into the scene. If I can say anything about this band, they are doing one hell of a job showcasing their vibe and energy on Instagram. They are always posting about talking to their community and preaching that in this genre, all are welcome. Just that alone is somet...

Interview With Cordiform Band

Image
Discovering new music within different bands is a therapeutic feeling, along with getting to know who the band is and what their story grows into. Forming in Melbourne, Australia, Cordiform brings their background of catchy riffs and honest lyrics submerging 2010s pop punk with a modern approach in sound about personal struggles, growing up and getting older, and the aspects of falling in and out of love. I had the privilege and honor to have a brief interview with them discussing topics from their origin story to their future goals as they continue to rise their name for growing crowds. How did you guys meet and form a band? What is Cordiform’s Origin Story?  Cordiform came together through mutual friends and online groups! Tim & James met from a friend's band and both were mutually ready to start making pop punk music together. Liam & Brody were found through the process of putting a call out for auditions for the band and the rest is history! The speed we went...
