Band spotlight: Comeback Kid and show review for 1720!
Just this past week I had the honor of seeing a band many of us in the hardcore scene grew up on. That band was none other than Comeback Kid from Winnipeg Canada. The band just finished its US portion of its tour for the 25th anniversary of their biggest album “Wake The Dead”. They are now onto the European part of the tour and man do they put on a show.
The band’s first album “Turn It Around” was released in 2002 and they have been playing shows ever since. Over the years they have gone through a few line up changes with the most notable being Scott Wade being lead vocals from 2001-2006 with Andrew Neufeld being their vocalist from 2006-present. However their fan favorite album has got to be “Wake The Dead”. This album has some of their biggest songs to date such as the albums title track “Wake The Dead”. It features crunchy and heavy guitar riffs and heavy breakdowns. It also shows off the bands anthem like lyrics which really get a crowd involved in the show; something this scene is very big on. In my honest opinion the band has always stayed true to their hardcore straightedge sound. The band has had themes in their music of not giving up and fighting through your struggles no matter what life may throw at you.
This is something this page holds very close to its heart. It is bands like Comeback Kid that are the reason I started this page. To share the music that has let me know I’ll never be alone while creating a catalog of bands for those just getting into the genres of hardcore, pop punk, emo, and alternative music.
I recently saw them perform at 1720 a warehouse turned venue in downtown Los Angeles. The Venue was really cool! It was also a no barricades show so stage diving was definitely present which really added to the show experience. Comeback Kid and Koyo put on the two best sets I’ve ever scene! The crowd was amazing and I feel like that was not just due to the fan size of these bands but also due to the bands themselves. One other band that preformed Desmadre had a really cool feel to them featuring hip hop at the beginning of their songs just before some of the most brutal breakdowns I’ve heard in a long time. Huge shout out to Big Ass Truck Band for taking some stickers from me after their absolutely sick set. Their singer mentioned how important it is to do something for your scene. Whether it be making a zine or starting a band and it really inspired me to keep at it with the blog. Let’s not forget the opening act “Start Today” they really set the tone for this show with their heavy fast paced drums, even faster guitar, and hard hitting lyrics. They were a great band to watch.
It was one of the first shows I’ve been to that I felt like transported me back in time to the beginnings of the hardcore straightedge scene. However heard recently on a Instagram reel a point that I had not really thought of before. Every time you see a post of a big band like Blink 182, Green Day, Bad Religion, etc. playing in a basement before they were big remember that no one knew who they were then either. If you wanna have those stories in the future go to your local scene’s shows. Go to the backyard shows, the basement shows, and get there early for the opening act. I have discovered bands like Anxious Ike of my all time favorite bands on tour with the Wonder Years. However they were one of if not the very first band to play.
So get out there to some local shows! Go see the opening acts. Join the community and be a participant in it. Don’t just watch! Make sure to stream Comeback Kid, Koyo, Desmadre, Big Ass Truck and Start Today! Last but not least I wanna leave my top tracks from this show.
1.) Wake the Dead - Comeback Kid
2.) Big Ass Truck - Big Ass Truck
3.) Sin Of Man - Desmadre
4.) 51st state - Koyo
5.)The Way We Are - Start Today
