Band Spotlight : Calling All Captains
Calling All Captains has come a long way since they first started their musical journey, and let me say they deserve it all! My first live experience seeing Calling All Captains was way back in 2019 when they played the Hi-Hat in Highland Park CA. I saw them with about 10 other people but they poured their hearts into their performance. Just recently I saw them again for the second time at Chain Reaction in Anaheim CA and the experience was just as surreal!
Since seeing them in 2019 the band has sized down from a 5 piece to a 4 piece band consisting of Brad Bremner (Guitar/Vocals), Connor Dawkins (Guitar/Vocals) Luc Gauthier (Lead Vocals), and Tim Wilson (Drums). However this decrease in size has certainly not impacted the bands sound and style in any way. In fact one of my favorite things about this band is their evolution of sound. On their first EP “Nothing Grows Here” the band was very raw and crunchy definitely giving off an early 2010’s pop punk vibe from their sound. However just a little under 3 years ago on October 29th, 2021 the band released their first full length album titled “Slowly Getting Better” where they introduced a refreshed version of this sound while still maintaining the integrity of their original sound. In this new album the band has shown their musical progress with themes of post hardcore on songs such as “Loyalty” as well as some acoustic tones like in the opening of the track “Laurel Canyon”.
Their newest EP (e)motion sickness goes to show that the band just does not ever miss. The track “be cool” has to be my favorite. The song sounds as though it would fit seamlessly on their first EP! While once again bringing fresh elements of post hardcore and even metal core. With their sound and overall Ora as a band I would 100% put them up their with the likes of bands such as “A Day To Remember”, “Silverstein”, and “ The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus”! So definitely consider giving them a listen, buying some merch, and giving them a follow on all their socials!
